THE WONDER TOOL FOR PEDICURES in various areas of aesthetic, non-surgical medical services [including laser/IPL]. There was also talk of unifying standards throughout the EU [European Union]. How will they standardise training and use of lasers and other aesthetic treatments across 28 or more countries, when here in Australia we can't even sort that out between seven states! Whatever happens, it will be a nightmare to negotiate and implement. I was excited to hear Elizabeth Raymond Brown talk about fractional and non-fractional ablative lasers. I attended a course with her years ago in the UK. I managed to talk with her during a break and was pleased she remembered me and knew what I was up to. She is a lecturer at Loughborough University and a really good speaker and educator. I learnt a great deal from observing her teaching techniques when I first studied with her. Caerwyn Ash, a marvellous young Welsh scientist, also presented an interesting paper. We catch up at various international conferences and I've often turned to him for advice or clarification on matters. He earned his PhD at some ridiculously young age and teaches at Swansea University after having worked in the laser/IPL manufacturing industry but will always find time to help others. He was only there briefly on the Thursday but he stayed on to hear my presentation before leaving, which was a huge compliment. My talk went down well. I was asked a few questions while on the panel following the presentations, however during the rest of the conference I was stopped a number of times and questioned on my findings with laser treatment of Onychomycosis [toe nail fungus]. I have had email questions coming through since as well so it seems to have stirred up a bit of interest. The conference continued with numerous interesting presentations from local UK specialists as well as a number of overseas speakers from Italy, Germany, Holland, India and the USA. It was an impressive line-up and incredibly interesting with so many experts generously offering their thoughts, ideas and research material. The whole meeting was characterised by a great friendliness and enthusiasm by all, including those that were obviously new to the industry and attending for the first time through to seasoned professionals with many years of experience. One final note on the BMLA conference...what glorious spring weather they put on. The last time I was in the UK in April there was snow and it was freezing. This time it was delightfully mild.
