Add a tomato, all still ok? Or do you burp or feel uncomfortable? You add an avocado – yum! Or do you feel heavy, bloated? Simply, I am saying you need to listen to your digestion when you eat. I find I have to eat a pile of vegetables before eating anything else – my body likes the prebiotic effect. Find what works for you. Once you learn to listen to your body, you will enjoy your food more, you will feel less tired, less bloated, lose weight and improve your immune system beyond measure. There are certain foods you need to avoid, or eat in minimal quantities; • Fatty foods – take-away foods such as burgers, fried chicken, hot chips, ice cream sundaes, chips, hot dogs etc. • Processed foods – processed meats, packaged foods full of fillers and sugars, processed cheese, instant soup, tinned meals and pre-cooked prepared instant meals (read the back of the pack; some are fine). • Sugar-laden foods – packaged foods, breakfast cereals (again, read the back of the packet), icecream (some so-called ‘icecreams’ contain pretty mcuh everything except milk and cream! • Chemical-laden foods – read the back of everything you buy; you will be amazed at what those so-called healthy foods often contain. If it has a number on the back – don’t eat it! Also be aware that the vegetables you buy in the shops are all sprayed with pesticides which build up in your body and wreak havoc with your immune system. There are now more and more links between these ‘safe’ chemical sprays and cancer. Breathe to live We breathe every day, but do you actually breathe? Breathing, really breathing, is fundamentally important to our wellbeing. D uring the day we breathe up to 28,000 times, which is about as many times as the average person will go to bed in a lifetime! But how often do we think about our breathing? Breathing is life, ever ything breathes: people, all animals, all plants; in fact, the entire planet breathes. Breathing is the central unchanging fact of existence. There is evidence linking laboured or impaired breathing to diseases such as emphysema, asthma and bronchitis, all of which effect the immune system. Do your hold your breath when you typing at the computer, or run up the stairs to an important meeting? Do you ever stop to take a big, deep breath, just for the sake of it? You will find that once you become aware of your breathing – you will notice how discordant it is. But it is incredibly easy to remedy! Every now and again just sigh. Sighing creates resistance to airflow on exhalation and this can help relax the chest muscles. To help relax muscles in the chest and abdomen when you are stressed, take a full, deep breath in through your nose so your lungs are completely filled. Then, as you exhale, say ‘aaaaahhhhh’ softly in a sighing sound. Repeat three times or until you feel completely relaxed.
